Shop Manager

We are seeking a Shop Manager with extensive experience in diesel engine repair and leadership skills to ensure efficient operations, maintain high-quality standards, and drive customer satisfaction. Dedicated to optimizing workflow, fostering a culture of safety, and achieving business goals through effective team management and technical expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the diesel mechanic shop, including scheduling repairs, assigning tasks to mechanics, and ensuring timely completion of work.
  • Train and supervise diesel mechanics and support staff. Provide guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality work and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for repairs. Monitor inventory levels, reorder supplies as needed, and manage inventory budget.
  • Interact with drivers to understand their repair needs and communicate repair progress. Address driver inquiries, complaints, and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ensure all repairs meet industry standards and manufacturer specifications. Conduct quality inspections and implement corrective actions as necessary to maintain high-quality workmanship.
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for employees and customers. Conduct regular safety inspections, provide safety training, and address any safety concerns promptly.
  • Develop and manage the shop's budget, including labor costs, parts expenses, and overhead expenses. Monitor financial performance and implement cost-saving measures to improve profitability.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of shop equipment, including lifts, diagnostic tools, and machinery. Schedule routine maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure equipment reliability.
  • Complete administrative duties such as maintaining records, preparing reports, and processing paperwork related to repairs, inventory, and personnel.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency enhancements. Implement best practices and recommend upgrades to equipment or technology to enhance shop performance.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a diesel mechanic or in a similar automotive repair role is typically required, with at least five years of experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, vehicle systems, and repair techniques. Familiarity with diagnostic tools and software used in diesel engine diagnostics.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team of mechanics, prioritize tasks, and delegate responsibilities effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to interact professionally with customers, employees, and vendors.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using computerized diagnostic tools, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Relevant certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification or state-issued mechanic certifications may be preferred or required, depending on the employer and location.
