POSITION SUMMARY – Maintenance Technician (Fresh Produce Facility)

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing and/or coordinating the repair, maintenance, and food‑safety–compliant upkeep of facility structures, production equipment, and supporting systems within a fresh produce processing environment. This role ensures operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and regulatory compliance by conducting preventive and corrective maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration troubleshooting, while documenting all work per FSMA, FDA, USDA, GMP, and company standards.

This position supports safe handling of raw produce, cold‑chain integrity, and reliable operation of wash lines, conveyors, packaging equipment, and climate‑controlled storage areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties

  • Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance on production equipment, including conveyors, motors, sensors, control panels, wash systems, packaging lines, and refrigeration units.
  • Troubleshoot electrical components such as relays, contactors, limit switches, wiring, PLC‑controlled devices, and low‑voltage circuits.
  • Inspect equipment regularly to ensure proper functionality and compliance with food safety standards.
  • Support operation and maintenance of building systems including refrigeration, HVAC, water filtration, and electrical distribution.
  • Evaluate facility conditions (production floors, cold rooms, sanitation areas) to identify repair needs.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and food‑safe supplies.
  • Coordinate outsourced electrical or mechanical repairs when required.
  • Ensure all maintenance work follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), sanitation protocols, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Verify completed work meets specifications, safety requirements, and internal quality standards.
  • Document all electrical and mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and inspections per regulatory expectations and company policy.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Technical Skills

  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience required.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical systems including motors, control circuits, sensors, wiring, VFDs, and basic PLC‑assisted troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of equipment commonly used in fresh produce processing (wash lines, conveyors, cutters, packaging equipment).
  • Understanding of refrigeration systems and cold storage operations.
  • Familiarity with GMPs, HACCP, FSMA, and sanitation requirements.
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
  • Skilled in safe use of electrical testing tools (multimeters, continuity testers, lockout/tagout devices).
  • Basic computer skills and experience with CMMS preferred.
